Department Introduction
The department aims to prepare language professionals with solid English and Spanish language abilities and cross-cultural literacy.
The department has a low student-faculty ratio and focuses on maintaining small classes. Accordingly, faculty members can grasp the students’ learning situations and improve their learning effectiveness. The department tries to ensure that students have the best learning opportunities.
The University emphasizes the humanistic spirit; thus, it provides voluntary service opportunities for students to serve the needy in Taiwan and abroad, and requires them to have a certain number of community service hours each semester.
The department pays special attention to each student’s learning needs and provides courses to fit their needs. In addition to providing 36 credit hours of professional courses, the department offers a variety of elective courses listed below:
- English and Spanish language skills and teacher-training courses:
English and Spanish language skills, English pedagogy, linguistics, teaching materials and design, etc.
- English and Spanish for international commerce and business administration:
Business English, business administration, practical English, English business correspondence, communication skills, English for international conference management, English for tourism and hospitality, etc.
- English and Spanish for multimedia and cultural diversity:
English for magazine editing, Children’s literature and Children’s book creation, public speaking, English presentation skills, multimedia marketing, English for the technology industry, etc.
The department works with other departments/programs to offer the International Marketing Micro Program; the Chinese Language Teaching Program; High School Teacher Preparation Program, etc.
For students who passed the high-intermediate level General English Proficiency Test, before the first day of classes in the first year, the University will exempt them from taking freshman English courses.
The essential literacies/core competencies for our students are:
- Have international perspectives and capabilities to put Tzu Chi’s humanistic culture into practice.
- Skillful in English listening, speaking, reading, writing, interpretation, and translation.
- Obtained fundamental skills in conducting research related to English.
- Capable of engaging in professional language services.
